Basalt originates from the earth's interior and was brought to the surface as lava many thousands of years ago. Melted again, the material in its basic form is made by spinning it into a defined structure. When this has cooled down, it is compressed into stonewool as we know it.

From volcanic basalt to stonewool it is a completely natural process producing a natural final product: inert and free of pathogens.

Properties
Stonewool is used more and more, because of the following properties:

• it is man-made material, manufactured to accurate specifications;
• it is inert and pathogen-free
• it is easy to manage
• it produces a higher yield
• it is more controllable than other substrates
• it is more efficient with water and energy use
• it minimizes the use of desinfectants
• it minimizes nutrient use
• good air to water ratio

Growcubes are small 1/2” cubes of stonewool. There are several advantages to using this loose medium: better aeration due to how the cubes stack on top of each other, maximum drainage from each cube so that you can hardly ever overwater your plant, easily mixes with other loose media (such as expanded clay rocks or CocoCan™ Gro-Mix), lightweight and much cleaner than peat-based media, but with better growth rate. The properties of Growcubes make it like a 50/50 mix of absorbent to repellent stonewool.

These small cubes retain water extremely well. The rigidity of the cubes results in a growing medium with many cavities, ensuring a continuously high air porosity percentage. This ideal water-air balance lays the foundations for an easy to manage crop.
