Plant roots, like fish in an aquarium, need oxygen to survive and grow. Water added to regular garden soil provides oxygen and then drains away to be replaced by fresh rain or irrigation water.
In a closed hydroponics system, the amount of oxygen in the water is gradually used up by the plant roots as the system continuously recirculates the water and nutrients. Therefore, an air pump connected with an air stone in the water supply provides a continuous source of air and oxygen in the water which is promptly transmitted to the plant roots.
It can also be used for aeration in large nutrient reservoirs. Uses a mere 8 watts of electricity, produces 3 PSI.
